1946 : Nuclear Bomb Test
Operation Crossroads (picture) was a pair of nuclear weapon tests conducted by the United States at Bikini Atoll (Marshall Islands) in mid-1946.
The atoll is known for the nuclear testing the United States conducted on it during the 1940s and 1950s.
From 1946-1958, 23 nuclear bombs were detonated at seven sites on the atoll.
The one seen on this picture was detonated in just 90 feet of water and caused huge damage and contamination to the atoll.
